Minimum support prices (MSP)

The minimum support price is the price the Government of India announces for each marketing season: government procurement centres buy the crop at no less than it. Comparing what the trader pays with it shows how much less a farmer got. Prices are in rupees a quintal.

The kharif marketing season runs from 1 October to 30 September; the rabi season from 1 April to 31 March, but rabi crops are harvested and bought from February (gram was bought at the new price in February), so a rabi crop sold from 1 February takes the new season's price. Paddy harvested in yasangi is sold at the price of the kharif season that began the October before. An earlier sale takes the old season's price. This rule is for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh only.
